Tumwater School Board candidates we support
Every voter in Tumwater School District will be able to vote for one candidate for each of the four School Board positions that will be on the ballot.
Based on our conversations with the candidates and their public statements, these candidates most align with the TSD4All priorities, which are: 1) To foster inclusivity and transparency, and follow District policies and state law; 2) To budget based on realistic enrollment estimates and an equitable allocation of resources; and 3) To promote equity between schools within the District.
This election matters
In February a majority of Tumwater School Board members voted in favor of a resolution that would have banned trans girls from playing sports with other girls - an action that risked putting the District in violation of state law. At the same time, the District was experiencing a multi-million dollar deficit and made significant cuts to teacher and staff positions as well as programs.
Following the February meeting, the Board moved meetings at the last minute, eventually only holding them by Zoom, had fences built to keep protesters away from a building, hired a security guard to screen members of the public who wished to attend meetings, and had the police called on student protesters.
Four of the five Board Director positions will be on the ballot. One of the Board members who supported the trans ban is seeking reelection: Ty Kuehl. The only Board member who opposed the ban is also seeking reelection: Melissa Beard. Two positions are open.
Our Tumwater School Board needs to align its decisions with state law and the Tumwater values of inclusivity, equity, and accountability.
In this election, vote for a slate of inclusive School Board candidates and show that in Tumwater, ALL students belong.
